Hebrew Text— 1 Samuel 23:2Therefore David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go and strike these Philistines?” Yahweh said to David, “Go strike the Philistines, and save Keilah.”

and when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”
Yahweh, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel says: “I am Yahweh your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
Behold, Yahweh’s eye is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his loving kindness,
They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun strike them: for he who has mercy on them will lead them. He will guide them by springs of water.
My son, don’t forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments:
David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken, and David rescued his two wives.
A man’s steps are from Yahweh; how then can man understand his way?
A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps.
Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.
Saul was afraid of David, because Yahweh was with him, and had departed from Saul.
When Saul inquired of Yahweh, Yahweh didn’t answer him by dreams, by Urim, or by prophets.
You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.
The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from Yahweh.
You shall put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be on Aaron’s heart, when he goes in before Yahweh. Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel on his heart before Yahweh continually.
Yahweh said to Gideon, “I will save you by the three hundred men who lapped, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.”
The children of Israel went up and wept before Yahweh until evening; and they asked of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I again draw near to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother?” Yahweh said, “Go up against him.”
Now Yahweh’s Spirit departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.
One of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.
They beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land each man cast his stone, and filled it. They also stopped all the springs of water, and cut down all the good trees, until in Kir Hareseth all they left was its stones; however the men armed with slings went around it, and attacked it.
A man’s steps are established by Yahweh. He delights in his way.
Establish my footsteps in your word. Don’t let any iniquity have dominion over me.
but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, or hear, or know; and you have not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways.
There was a famine in the land. Abram went down into Egypt to live as a foreigner there, for the famine was severe in the land.
and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.
Saul asked counsel of God, “Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you deliver them into the hand of Israel?” But he didn’t answer him that day.
Then David inquired of Yahweh yet again. Yahweh answered him, and said, “Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here.”
to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men used to stay.
After this, David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” Yahweh said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”
David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?” Yahweh said to David, “Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into your hand.”
When David inquired of Yahweh, he said, “You shall not go up. Circle around behind them, and attack them in front of the mulberry trees.
For by you, I run against a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall.
But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there a prophet of Yahweh here, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?” One of the king of Israel’s servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here.”
The governor told them that they should not eat of the most holy things until a priest stood up to serve with Urim and with Thummim.
Good and upright is Yahweh, therefore he will instruct sinners in the way.
Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him, and honor him.
and Yahweh will guide you continually, satisfy your soul in dry places, and make your bones strong. You will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters don’t fail.
I bowed my head, and worshiped Yahweh, and blessed Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter for his son.
There was a famine in the land, in addition to the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.
You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.
you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,
Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it “The Tent of Meeting.” Everyone who sought Yahweh went out to the Tent of Meeting, which was outside the camp.
Whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the children of Israel traveled; and in the place where the cloud remained, there the children of Israel encamped.
Whether it was two days, or a month, or a year that the cloud stayed on the tabernacle, remaining on it, the children of Israel remained encamped, and didn’t travel; but when it was taken up, they traveled.
They said to him, “Please ask counsel of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.”
The children of Israel arose, went up to Bethel, and asked counsel of God. They asked, “Who shall go up for us first to battle against the children of Benjamin?” Yahweh said, “Judah first.”
and Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease?” Yahweh said, “Go up; for tomorrow I will deliver him into your hand.”
He inquired of Yahweh for him, gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, he came down with an ephod in his hand.
David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “If I pursue after this troop, will I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue; for you will surely overtake them, and will without fail recover all.”
They said to the king, “The man who consumed us, and who devised against us, that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the borders of Israel,
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
who set out to go down into Egypt, and have not asked my advice, to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!
He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before Yahweh. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.”
The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.
After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked of Yahweh, saying, “Who should go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”
Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, “Is there yet a man to come here?” Yahweh answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”
Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?” Saul answered, “I am very distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, by prophets, or by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do.”
There was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David sought the face of Yahweh. Yahweh said, “It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.”
Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for Yahweh’s word.”
You shall strike every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.’ ”
Also, let’s bring the ark of our God back to us again; for we didn’t seek it in the days of Saul.”
David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?” Yahweh said to him, “Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand.”
Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for Yahweh’s word.”
For by you, I advance through a troop. By my God, I leap over a wall.
I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.
Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself. It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
