A worthless man devises mischief. His speech is like a scorching fire.
“You shall not spread a false report. Don’t join your hand with the wicked to be a malicious witness.
“Keep far from a false charge, and don’t kill the innocent and righteous; for I will not justify the wicked.
Don’t deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen up against me, such as breathe out cruelty.
He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.
For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.
But I tell you that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment. Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ will be in danger of the council. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.
but nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
Moreover, my father, behold, yes, see the skirt of your robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and didn’t kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor disobedience in my hand, and I have not sinned against you, though you hunt for my life to take it.
He said, “Why does my lord pursue his servant? For what have I done? What evil is in my hand?
arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
A wrathful man stirs up contention, but one who is slow to anger appeases strife.
The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.
Those who forsake the law praise the wicked; but those who keep the law contend with them.
For I have heard the defaming of many, “Terror on every side! Denounce, and we will denounce him!” say all my familiar friends, those who watch for my fall. “Perhaps he will be persuaded, and we will prevail against him, and we will take our revenge on him.”
Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.
They are of the world. Therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them.
For the king will hear, to deliver his servant out of the hand of the man who would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, “Behold, my son, who came out of my bowels, seeks my life. How much more this Benjamite, now? Leave him alone, and let him curse; for Yahweh has invited him.
But they didn’t listen, and Manasseh seduced them to do that which is evil more than the nations did whom Yahweh destroyed before the children of Israel.
he who doesn’t slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor casts slurs against his fellow man;
For you will save the afflicted people, but the arrogant eyes you will bring down.
Trust in Yahweh, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.
Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever, and their dwelling places to all generations. They name their lands after themselves.
You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother’s son.
Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
Princes have persecuted me without a cause, but my heart stands in awe of your words.
Yahweh, my heart isn’t arrogant, nor my eyes lofty; nor do I concern myself with great matters, or things too wonderful for me.
One who brings gossip betrays a confidence, but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret.
There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.
He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don’t keep company with him who opens wide his lips.
A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.
who tell the seers, “Don’t see!” and the prophets, “Don’t prophesy to us right things. Tell us pleasant things. Prophesy deceits.
“You have called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, my terrors on every side. There was no one that escaped or remained in the day of Yahweh’s anger. My enemy has consumed those whom I have cared for and brought up.
Slanderous men have been in you to shed blood. In you they have eaten on the mountains. They have committed lewdness among you.
As for both these kings, their hearts will be to do mischief, and they will speak lies at one table; but it won’t prosper, for the end will still be at the appointed time.
and they found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward,
Yahweh smelled the pleasant aroma. Yahweh said in his heart, “I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake because the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth. I will never again strike every living thing, as I have done.
They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
There you shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
If an unrighteous witness rises up against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing,
I am among those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up Yahweh’s inheritance?”
and David said to the Gibeonites, “What should I do for you? And with what should I make atonement, that you may bless Yahweh’s inheritance?”
For they intended evil against you. They plotted evil against you which cannot succeed.
Teach me your way, Yahweh. Lead me in a straight path, because of my enemies.
For, behold, they lie in wait for my soul. The mighty gather themselves together against me, not for my disobedience, nor for my sin, Yahweh.
Woe is me, that I live in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
A worthless person, a man of iniquity, is he who walks with a perverse mouth,
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but deceit in it crushes the spirit.
Drive out the mocker, and strife will go out; yes, quarrels and insults will stop.
There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! Their eyelids are lifted up.
Don’t go out into the field or walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and terror are on every side.
They are all grievous rebels, going around to slander. They are bronze and iron. All of them deal corruptly.
“Everyone beware of his neighbor, and don’t trust in any brother; for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will go around like a slanderer.
On the next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said to him, “Yahweh has not called your name Pashhur, but Magormissabib.
They began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man perverting the nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”
being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, malice; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil habits, secret slanderers,
But as it is, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother who is a sexual sinner, or covetous, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or an extortionist. Don’t even eat with such a person.
“Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath,
“ ‘You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people. “ ‘You shall not endanger the life of your neighbor. I am Yahweh.
David said, “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?”
On the next day, an evil spirit from God came mightily on Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. David played with his hand, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand;
David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”
Therefore deal kindly with your servant; for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you; but if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?”
He said to David, “You are more righteous than I; for you have done good to me, whereas I have done evil to you.
Now therefore, please let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is so that Yahweh has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, they are cursed before Yahweh; for they have driven me out today that I shouldn’t cling to Yahweh’s inheritance, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods!’
Yahweh, my God, if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands,
For I have heard the slander of many, terror on every side, while they conspire together against me, they plot to take away my life.
Unrighteous witnesses rise up. They ask me about things that I don’t know about.
They plot injustice, saying, “We have made a perfect plan!” Surely man’s mind and heart are cunning.
If I cherished sin in my heart, the Lord wouldn’t have listened.
I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won’t tolerate one who is arrogant and conceited.
Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock. They will hear my words, for they are well spoken.
A perverse man stirs up strife. A whisperer separates close friends.
An evildoer heeds wicked lips. A liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.
The words of a gossip are like dainty morsels: they go down into a person’s innermost parts.
The north wind produces rain; so a backbiting tongue brings an angry face.
A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.
If a ruler listens to lies, all of his officials are wicked.
“Don’t slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.
Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?
Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of those works do you stone me?”
Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?”
Yet if because of food your brother is grieved, you walk no longer in love. Don’t destroy with your food him for whom Christ died.
and that older women likewise be reverent in behavior, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good,
And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.
