Hebrew Text— Exodus 1:5All the souls who came out of Jacob’s body were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt already.

Yahweh said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.
Yahweh brought him outside, and said, “Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” He said to Abram, “So your offspring will be.”
You shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. You shall hurry and bring my father down here.”
He said, “I am God, the God of your father. Don’t be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of you a great nation.
They also said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live as foreigners in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks. For the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
Aaron took Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, as his wife; and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
Your fathers went down into Egypt with seventy persons; and now Yahweh your God has made you as the stars of the sky for multitude.
“Please speak in the ears of all the men of Shechem, ‘Is it better for you that all the sons of Jerubbaal, who are seventy persons, rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
He went to his father’s house at Ophrah, and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, being seventy persons, on one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.
I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.
They took their livestock, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt—Jacob, and all his offspring with him,
All the souls who came with Jacob into Egypt, who were his direct offspring, in addition to Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls were sixty-six.
The sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two souls. All the souls of the house of Jacob, who came into Egypt, were seventy.
But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.
“Bring Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, near to you from among the children of Israel, that he may minister to me in the priest’s office: Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.
Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them.
Yahweh your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as the stars of the sky for multitude.
Wicked people earn deceitful wages, but one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.
Tell the righteous “Good!” For they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.
Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.
and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight.
Your servant, my father, said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.
God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.
There I will provide for you; for there are yet five years of famine; lest you come to poverty, you, and your household, and all that you have.” ’
Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they got themselves possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.
Yahweh said to him, “Go down! You shall bring Aaron up with you, but don’t let the priests and the people break through to come up to Yahweh, lest he break out against them.”
These are those who were counted of the children of Israel, six hundred one thousand seven hundred thirty.
Those who were counted of them were twenty-three thousand, every male from a month old and upward; for they were not counted among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.
Yahweh didn’t set his love on you nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples;
You will be left few in number, even though you were as the stars of the sky for multitude, because you didn’t listen to Yahweh your God’s voice.
Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, to the rulers of Jezreel, even the elders, and to those who brought up Ahab’s sons, saying,
You also multiplied their children as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you said to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.
when they were but a few men in number, yes, very few, and foreigners in it.
He increased his people greatly, and made them stronger than their adversaries.
Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, who stood before the king of Babylon, came into Jerusalem.
Seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel stood before them. In the middle of them Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan stood, every man with his censer in his hand; and the smell of the cloud of incense went up.
Jacob fled into the country of Aram, and Israel served to get a wife, and for a wife he tended flocks and herds.
Joseph sent and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.
Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, himself and our fathers,
In all, we were two hundred seventy-six souls on the ship.
For God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the labor of love which you showed toward his name, in that you served the saints, and still do serve them.
Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?”
Jacob loved Rachel. He said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter.”
She named him Joseph, saying, “May Yahweh add another son to me.”
The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife: Joseph and Benjamin.
“Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a spring. His branches run over the wall.
Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
The children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.
God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.
He said, “Don’t come close. Take off your sandals, for the place you are standing on is holy ground.”
He said to Moses, “Come up to Yahweh, you, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship from a distance.
Then Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up.
Be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain.
Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war:
“To the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the Tent of Meeting.
You shall answer and say before Yahweh your God, “My father was a Syrian ready to perish. He went down into Egypt, and lived there, few in number. There he became a great, mighty, and populous nation.
When you have finished tithing all the tithe of your increase in the third year, which is the year of tithing, then you shall give it to the Levite, to the foreigner, to the fatherless, and to the widow, that they may eat within your gates and be filled.
Gideon had seventy sons conceived from his body, for he had many wives.
He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines; for he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and became the father of twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
For you, God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
Your congregation lived therein. You, God, prepared your goodness for the poor.
He has given food to those who fear him. He always remembers his covenant.
He who has pity on the poor lends to Yahweh; he will reward him.
in the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar, he carried away captive from Jerusalem eight hundred thirty-two persons;
Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you he will in no way lose his reward.”
“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
His mercy is for generations of generations on those who fear him.
They indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brothers, though these have come out of the body of Abraham,
for he was yet in the body of his father when Melchizedek met him.
