He has walled up my way so that I can’t pass, and has set darkness in my paths.
I go mourning without the sun. I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.
I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long.
For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, God has taken away my right:
For God has made my heart faint. The Almighty has terrified me.
Yahweh is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.
For you are the God of my strength. Why have you rejected me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
He has walled me about, so that I can’t go out. He has made my chain heavy.
“You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: ‘You say this, “Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them. How then can we live?” ’
I will multiply men on you, all the house of Israel, even all of it. The cities will be inhabited, and the waste places will be built.
Again he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and tell them, ‘You dry bones, hear Yahweh’s word.
“Therefore the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Now I will reverse the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel. I will be jealous for my holy name.
Therefore behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, that she can’t find her way.
Turn to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope! Even today I declare that I will restore double to you.
but in very deed—as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with Yahweh’s glory—
whatever prayer and supplication is made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who shall each know the plague of his own heart, and spread out his hands toward this house,
When she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught hold of his feet. Gehazi came near to thrust her away; but the man of God said, “Leave her alone; for her soul is troubled within her; and Yahweh has hidden it from me, and has not told me.”
Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they bring suffering on me. In anger they hold a grudge against me.
God, why have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?
“As when one plows and breaks up the earth, our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol.”
They will not labor in vain nor give birth for calamity; for they are the offspring of Yahweh’s blessed and their descendants with them.
“At that time,” says Yahweh, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”
I said, “My strength has perished, along with my expectation from Yahweh.”
Waters flowed over my head. I said, “I am cut off.”
He caused me to pass by them all around: and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and behold, they were very dry.
At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is, being interpreted, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
I don’t reject the grace of God. For if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nothing!”
You were made alive when you were dead in transgressions and sins,
For this cause I also, when I couldn’t stand it any longer, sent that I might know your faith, for fear that by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor would have been in vain.
But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
Your strength will be spent in vain; for your land won’t yield its increase, neither will the trees of the land yield their fruit.
Now therefore, my lord, as Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, since Yahweh has withheld you from blood guiltiness, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now therefore let your enemies, and those who seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Elijah said, “As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”
The waters wear the stones. The torrents of it wash away the dust of the earth. So you destroy the hope of man.
Shall it go down with me to the gates of Sheol, or descend together into the dust?”
“As God lives, who has taken away my right, the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter
“Shall he who argues contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.”
How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
Yahweh, remember your tender mercies and your loving kindness, for they are from old times.
To you, Yahweh, I call. My rock, don’t be deaf to me, lest, if you are silent to me, I would become like those who go down into the pit.
As for me, I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before your eyes.” Nevertheless you heard the voice of my petitions when I cried to you.
Don’t withhold your tender mercies from me, Yahweh. Let your loving kindness and your truth continually preserve me.
I will ask God, my rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.
He alone is my rock, my salvation, and my fortress. I will never be greatly shaken.
Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?”
They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.
My eyes are dim from grief. I have called on you daily, Yahweh. I have spread out my hands to you.
For the enemy pursues my soul. He has struck my life down to the ground. He has made me live in dark places, as those who have been long dead.
Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of those who were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
Tell those who have a fearful heart, “Be strong! Don’t be afraid! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, God’s retribution. He will come and save you.
Behold, the Lord Yahweh will come as a mighty one, and his arm will rule for him. Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.
But I said, “I have labored in vain. I have spent my strength in vain for nothing; yet surely the justice due to me is with Yahweh, and my reward with my God.”
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!
Shall the plunder be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives be delivered?
“You afflicted, tossed with storms, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in beautiful colors, and lay your foundations with sapphires.
You will not be called Forsaken any more, nor will your land be called Desolate any more; but you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for Yahweh delights in you, and your land will be married.
Behold, Yahweh has proclaimed to the end of the earth, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your salvation comes! Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him!’ ”
Look down from heaven, and see from the habitation of your holiness and of your glory. Where are your zeal and your mighty acts? The yearning of your heart and your compassion is restrained toward me.
and you will swear, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ in truth, in justice, and in righteousness. The nations will bless themselves in him, and they will glory in him.”
Though they say, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ surely they swear falsely.”
But they say, ‘It is in vain; for we will walk after our own plans, and we will each follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.’ ”
For Yahweh says, “Your hurt is incurable. Your wound is grievous.
Yahweh says: “Yet again there will be heard in this place, about which you say, ‘It is waste, without man and without animal, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without animal,’
But you have utterly rejected us. You are very angry against us.
“What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?
Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost. We are completely cut off.’
I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
But my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets, didn’t they overtake your fathers? “Then they repented and said, ‘Just as Yahweh of Armies determined to do to us, according to our ways, and according to our practices, so he has dealt with us.’ ”
It shall come to pass that, as you were a curse among the nations, house of Judah and house of Israel, so I will save you, and you shall be a blessing. Don’t be afraid. Let your hands be strong.”
Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me.”
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!
Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?”
He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him.
For God has bound all to disobedience, that he might have mercy on all.
If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith also is in vain.
For we are a sweet aroma of Christ to God, in those who are saved and in those who perish:
I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more abundantly, am I loved the less?
I am afraid for you, that I might have wasted my labor for you.
holding up the word of life, that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.
For you yourselves know, brothers, our visit to you wasn’t in vain,
But whoever has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, then closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him?
Their dead bodies will be in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.
I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a number, one hundred forty-four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads.
But Zion said, “Yahweh has forsaken me, and the Lord has forgotten me.”
