He puts my feet in the stocks. He marks all my paths.’
The cords of death surrounded me. The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
My heart is severely pained within me. The terrors of death have fallen on me.
to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
who, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison, and secured their feet in the stocks.
Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron,
Yahweh, truly I am your servant. I am your servant, the son of your servant girl. You have freed me from my chains.
The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way, but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.
The teaching of the wise is a spring of life, to turn from the snares of death.
O Yahweh, why do you make us wander from your ways, and harden our heart from your fear? Return for your servants’ sake, the tribes of your inheritance.
“From on high has he sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them. He has spread a net for my feet. He has turned me back. He has made me desolate and I faint all day long.
As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil has come on us. Yet we have not entreated the favor of Yahweh our God, that we should turn from our iniquities and have discernment in your truth.
Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.
For I see that you are in the poison of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.”
Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did to his father in killing his seventy brothers;
But no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night,
“But those who are godless in heart lay up anger. They don’t cry for help when he binds them.
The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made. In the net which they hid, their own foot is taken.
You are my hiding place. You will preserve me from trouble. You will surround me with songs of deliverance.
I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long.
He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.
For innumerable evils have surrounded me. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up. They are more than the hairs of my head. My heart has failed me.
The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly.
The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, turning people from the snares of death.
I will bring the blind by a way that they don’t know. I will lead them in paths that they don’t know. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. I will do these things, and I will not forsake them.
Yahweh says: “The labor of Egypt, and the merchandise of Ethiopia, and the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you, and they will be yours. They will go after you. They shall come over in chains. They will bow down to you. They will make supplication to you: ‘Surely God is in you; and there is no one else. There is no other god.
The Lord Yahweh’s Spirit is on me, because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound,
“The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand. They are knit together. They have come up on my neck. He made my strength fail. The Lord has delivered me into their hands, against whom I am not able to stand.
They are all hot as an oven, and devour their judges. All their kings have fallen. There is no one among them who calls to me.
Now I will break his yoke from off you, and will burst your bonds apart.”
the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, to them light has dawned.”
But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God;
“Behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to increase the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.
The cords of Sheol were around me. The snares of death caught me.
and said to them, “You must not bring in the captives here, for you intend that which will bring on us a trespass against Yahweh, to add to our sins and to our guilt; for our guilt is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.”
In the time of his distress, he trespassed yet more against Yahweh, this same king Ahaz.
Therefore Yahweh brought on them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh in chains, bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.
Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes black the day terrify it.
Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
The eye of him who sees me will see me no more. Your eyes will be on me, but I will not be.
If I have sinned, what do I do to you, you watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself?
You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet,
But now you count my steps. Don’t you watch over my sin?
Yes, you do away with fear, and hinder devotion before God.
know now that God has subverted me, and has surrounded me with his net.
He has walled up my way so that I can’t pass, and has set darkness in my paths.
Therefore snares are around you. Sudden fear troubles you,
“As God lives, who has taken away my right, the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter
Beware lest you say, ‘We have found wisdom. God may refute him, not man;’
to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
Hide them in the dust together. Bind their faces in the hidden place.
The cords of Sheol were around me. The snares of death came on me.
Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am in distress. My eye, my soul, and my body waste away with grief.
You brought us into prison. You laid a burden on our backs.
God sets the lonely in families. He brings out the prisoners with singing, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.
For Yahweh hears the needy, and doesn’t despise his captive people.
For your loving kindness is great toward me. You have delivered my soul from the lowest Sheol.
to hear the groans of the prisoner; to free those who are condemned to death;
They bruised his feet with shackles. His neck was locked in irons,
He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke away their chains.
The cords of death surrounded me, the pains of Sheol got a hold of me. I found trouble and sorrow.
who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. Yahweh frees the prisoners.
to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a fool stepping into a noose.
For man also doesn’t know his time. As the fish that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare, even so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly on them.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death.
Yet the people have not turned to him who struck them, neither have they sought Yahweh of Armies.
to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoners out of the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness out of the prison.
saying to those who are bound, ‘Come out!’; to those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves!’ “They shall feed along the paths, and their pasture shall be on all treeless heights.
He has walled up my ways with cut stone. He has made my paths crooked.
He has turned away my ways, and pulled me in pieces. He has made me desolate.
I will also spread my net on him, and he will be taken in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will not see it, though he will die there.
The Lord Yahweh says: “I will spread out my net on you with a company of many peoples; and they will bring you up in my net.
When they go, I will spread my net on them. I will bring them down like the birds of the sky. I will chastise them, as their congregation has heard.
He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.
Don’t rejoice against me, my enemy. When I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, Yahweh will be a light to me.
I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you didn’t turn to me,’ says Yahweh.
Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and throw him into the outer darkness. That is where the weeping and grinding of teeth will be.’
Meanwhile, when a multitude of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his disciples first of all, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan had bound eighteen long years, be freed from this bondage on the Sabbath day?”
whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it.
But an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors by night, and brought them out and said,
One came and told them, “Behold, the men whom you put in prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people.”
For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,
He, in the days of his flesh, having offered up prayers and petitions with strong crying and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and having been heard for his godly fear,
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
