Judges 9:38
Hebrew Text— Judges 9:38Then Zebul said to him, “Now where is your mouth, that you said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Isn’t this the people that you have despised? Please go out now and fight with them.”

For according to the number of your cities are your gods, Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have you set up altars to the shameful thing, even altars to burn incense to Baal.’
He will say, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge;
“Assemble yourselves and come. Draw near together, you who have escaped from the nations. Those have no knowledge who carry the wood of their engraved image, and pray to a god that can’t save.
Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen. Let them save you in the time of your distress!”
Wisdom is too high for a fool. He doesn’t open his mouth in the gate.
“Because of the oppression of the weak and because of the groaning of the needy, I will now arise,” says Yahweh; “I will set him in safety from those who malign him.”
He who despises his neighbor sins, but he who has pity on the poor is blessed.
Their land also is full of idols. They worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.
Yahweh, your hand is lifted up, yet they don’t see; but they will see your zeal for the people, and be disappointed. Yes, fire will consume your adversaries.
They bear it on their shoulder. They carry it, and set it in its place, and it stands there. It cannot move from its place. Yes, one may cry to it, yet it can not answer. It cannot save him out of his trouble.
Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry to the gods to which they offer incense, but they will not save them at all in the time of their trouble.
Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the lawyer of this world? Hasn’t God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
God saw the earth, and saw that it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
The magicians tried with their enchantments to produce lice, but they couldn’t. There were lice on man, and on animal.
They went out into the field, harvested their vineyards, trod the grapes, celebrated, and went into the house of their god and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech.
But certain worthless fellows said, “How could this man save us?” They despised him, and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, “The blind and the lame will keep you out of here;” thinking, “David can’t come in here.”
Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, “Yahweh says, ‘Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand today. Then you will know that I am Yahweh.’ ”
Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother.” The king of Israel said to him, “No, for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
Also Judah didn’t keep the commandments of Yahweh their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
But the people stayed quiet, and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”
and say, ‘The king says, “Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I return in peace.” ’ ”
Ahaz gathered together the vessels of God’s house, and cut the vessels of God’s house in pieces, and shut up the doors of Yahweh’s house; and he made himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem.
His ways are prosperous at all times. He is arrogant, and your laws are far from his sight. As for all his adversaries, he sneers at them.
The fear of Yahweh is clean, enduring forever. Yahweh’s ordinances are true, and righteous altogether.
Because they don’t respect the works of Yahweh, nor the operation of his hands, he will break them down and not build them up.
Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns, he will sweep away the green and the burning alike.
Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.
So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.
who forsake the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness,
who are crooked in their ways, and wayward in their paths,
In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely.
One who despises his neighbor is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding holds his peace.
He who walks in his uprightness fears Yahweh, but he who is perverse in his ways despises him.
Folly is joy to one who is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding keeps his way straight.
The path of life leads upward for the wise, to keep him from going downward to Sheol.
A corrupt witness mocks justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down iniquity.
Don’t be envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them;
The harp, lyre, tambourine, and flute, with wine, are at their feasts; but they don’t respect the work of Yahweh, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers who write oppressive decrees;
Yahweh of Armies has sworn, saying, “Surely, as I have thought, so shall it happen; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:
Where then are your wise men? Let them tell you now; and let them know what Yahweh of Armies has purposed concerning Egypt.
“Because you have said, ‘We have made a covenant with death, and we are in agreement with Sheol. When the overflowing scourge passes through, it won’t come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and we have hidden ourselves under falsehood.’ ”
The highways are desolate. The traveling man ceases. The covenant is broken. He has despised the cities. He doesn’t respect man.
Therefore he poured the fierceness of his anger on him, and the strength of battle. It set him on fire all around, but he didn’t know. It burned him, but he didn’t take it to heart.”
Who is like me? Who will call, and will declare it, and set it in order for me, since I established the ancient people? Let them declare the things that are coming, and that will happen.
They stoop and they bow down together. They could not deliver the burden, but they have gone into captivity.
“Stand now with your enchantments and with the multitude of your sorceries, in which you have labored from your youth, as if you might profit, as if you might prevail.
“But you who forsake Yahweh, who forget my holy mountain, who prepare a table for Fortune, and who fill up mixed wine to Destiny;
“But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble; for you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah.
Now where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you, nor against this land?’
“I called for my lovers, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders gave up the spirit in the city, while they sought food for themselves to refresh their souls.
Behold, when the wall has fallen, won’t it be said to you, “Where is the plaster with which you have plastered it?”
“ ‘ “A wife who commits adultery! Who takes strangers instead of her husband!
At the end of years they will join themselves together; and the daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make an agreement; but she will not retain the strength of her arm. He will also not stand, nor will his arm; but she will be given up, with those who brought her, and he who became the father of her, and he who strengthened her in those times.
She will follow after her lovers, but she won’t overtake them; and she will seek them, but won’t find them. Then she will say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.’
They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity. He will punish them for their sins.
Israel is a luxuriant vine that produces his fruit. According to the abundance of his fruit he has multiplied his altars. As their land has prospered, they have adorned their sacred stones.
If Gilead is wicked, surely they are worthless. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls. Indeed, their altars are like heaps in the furrows of the field.
Where is your king now, that he may save you in all your cities? And your judges, of whom you said, ‘Give me a king and princes?’
Who is wise, that he may understand these things? Who is prudent, that he may know them? For the ways of Yahweh are right, and the righteous walk in them; But the rebellious stumble in them.
Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they scoffed at him.
He spoke also this parable to certain people who were convinced of their own righteousness, and who despised all others.
The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of men, extortionists, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
Destruction and misery are in their ways.
For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I caused you to be raised up, that I might show in you my power, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”
We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You have honor, but we have dishonor.
For though there are things that are called “gods”, whether in the heavens or on earth; as there are many “gods” and many “lords”;
Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud,
When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.
