Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be arrogant, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;
for Demas left me, having loved this present world, and went to Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia; and Titus to Dalmatia.
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.
Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap according to kindness. Break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek Yahweh, until he comes and rains righteousness on you.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Most certainly I say to you, a rich man will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven with difficulty.
That which fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.
“Behold, this is the man who didn’t make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.”
He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet so that man can’t find out the work that God has done from the beginning even to the end.
For Yahweh says to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, “Break up your fallow ground, and don’t sow among thorns.
It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field.
Don’t trust in oppression. Don’t become vain in robbery. If riches increase, don’t set your heart on them.
He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may produce food out of the earth:
He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.
Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.
There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. “For whom then, do I labor and deprive my soul of enjoyment?” This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business.
Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
What was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this age and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions.
Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
“So be careful, or your hearts will be loaded down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day will come on you suddenly.
Now when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money,
But those who are determined to be rich fall into a temptation, a snare, and many foolish and harmful lusts, such as drown men in ruin and destruction.
He shall not multiply wives to himself, that his heart not turn away. He shall not greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
know for a certainty that Yahweh your God will no longer drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap to you, a scourge in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you.
But all the ungodly will be as thorns to be thrust away, because they can’t be taken with the hand,
He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.”
whose harvest the hungry eats up, and take it even out of the thorns. The snare gapes for their substance.
let briers grow instead of wheat, and stinkweed instead of barley.” The words of Job are ended.
You turn man to destruction, saying, “Return, you children of men.”
He covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain.
Thorns and snares are in the path of the wicked: whoever guards his soul stays from them.
Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down.
I will lay it a wasteland. It won’t be pruned or hoed, but it will grow briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it.”
It will happen in that day that every place where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silver shekels, shall be for briers and thorns.
Does he who plows to sow plow continually? Does he keep turning the soil and breaking the clods?
Thorns and briers will come up on my people’s land; yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city.
For, behold, Yahweh will come with fire, and his chariots will be like the whirlwind; to render his anger with fierceness, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
They have sown wheat, and have reaped thorns. They have exhausted themselves, and profit nothing. You will be ashamed of your fruits, because of Yahweh’s fierce anger.”
For, behold, they have gone away from destruction. Egypt will gather them up. Memphis will bury them. Nettles will possess their pleasant things of silver. Thorns will be in their tents.
But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise,
Others are those who are sown among the thorns. These are those who have heard the word,
But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.
Other fell amid the thorns, and the thorns grew with it, and choked it.
One man has faith to eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables.
but if it bears thorns and thistles, it is rejected and near being cursed, whose end is to be burned.
For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to not be idle or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We speak wisdom, however, among those who are full grown, yet a wisdom not of this world nor of the rulers of this world who are coming to nothing.
But I desire to have you to be free from cares. He who is unmarried is concerned for the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord;
