Hebrew Text— 2 Samuel 18:7The people of Israel were struck there before David’s servants, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.

Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
Yahweh will cause you to be struck before your enemies. You will go out one way against them, and will flee seven ways before them. You will be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth.
The Philistines put themselves in array against Israel. When they joined battle, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men of the army in the field.
Judah was defeated by Israel; and each man fled to his tent.
Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.
Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to Yahweh: they shall certainly not be unpunished.
“Declare in Egypt, publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes: say, ‘Stand up, and prepare; for the sword has devoured around you.’
Now there was long war between Saul’s house and David’s house. David grew stronger and stronger, but Saul’s house grew weaker and weaker.
In the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria for twenty years.
I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their good, and the good of their children after them.
For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”
For those who are such don’t serve our Lord, Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and flattering speech, they deceive the hearts of the innocent.
“You shall not follow a crowd to do evil. You shall not testify in court to side with a multitude to pervert justice.
I will set my face against you, and you will be struck before your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you; and you will flee when no one pursues you.
David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”
Abner said to Joab, “Please let the young men arise and play before us!” Joab said, “Let them arise!”
A messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.”
They took Absalom and cast him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones. Then all Israel fled, each to his own tent.
Pekah the son of Remaliah, his captain, conspired against him and attacked him in Samaria, in the fortress of the king’s house, with Argob and Arieh; and with him were fifty men of the Gileadites. He killed him, and reigned in his place.
“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is Yahweh’s wrath that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept Yahweh’s word, to do according to all that is written in this book.”
Would your wealth sustain you in distress, or all the might of your strength?
I will not be afraid of tens of thousands of people who have set themselves against me on every side.
All day long he deals graciously, and lends. His offspring is blessed.
Surely men of low degree are just a breath, and men of high degree are a lie. In the balances they will go up. They are together lighter than a breath.
The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the righteous shall stand.
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored for the righteous.
A man who isolates himself pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.
He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don’t keep company with him who opens wide his lips.
Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Wrath is not in me, but if I should find briers and thorns, I would do battle! I would march on them and I would burn them together.
Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,
For that day is of the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge himself of his adversaries. The sword will devour and be satiated, and will drink its fill of their blood; for the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, has a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
“The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’
What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.
Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,
Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme;
Israel saw the great work which Yahweh did to the Egyptians, and the people feared Yahweh; and they believed in Yahweh and in his servant Moses.
Yahweh said to me, “Tell them, ‘Don’t go up and don’t fight; for I am not among you, lest you be struck before your enemies.’ ”
and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near today to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them;
But it shall come to pass, if you will not listen to Yahweh your God’s voice, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come on you and overtake you.
He said, “I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end will be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.
On that day, Yahweh magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.
they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
when you disobey the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down yourselves to them. Then Yahweh’s anger will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from off the good land which he has given to you.”
If you forsake Yahweh, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after he has done you good.”
Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the army of the children of the east; for there fell one hundred twenty thousand men who drew sword.
The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell.
He said to his men, “Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh’s anointed.”
The battle was very severe that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before David’s servants.
Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”
But David’s servants had struck Benjamin and of Abner’s men so that three hundred sixty men died.
Absalom did this sort of thing to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
David sent the people out, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, “I will also surely go out with you myself.”
There happened to be there a wicked fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite; and he blew the trumpet, and said, “We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, Israel!”
So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. He came and bowed down to king Solomon; and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”
All Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.
When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So Israel departed to their tents.
They encamped opposite each other for seven days. So it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Syrians in one day.
A cry went throughout the army about the going down of the sun, saying, “Every man to his city, and every man to his country!”
He answered, “Don’t be afraid; for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
In those days, Yahweh began to send Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah.
Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war. They besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him.
Then David said to all the assembly, “Now bless Yahweh your God!” All the assembly blessed Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads and prostrated themselves before Yahweh and the king.
Abijah and his people killed them with a great slaughter, so five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell down slain.
and he went out to meet Asa, and said to him, “Hear me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin! Yahweh is with you, while you are with him; and if you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.
For Pekah the son of Remaliah killed in Judah one hundred twenty thousand in one day, all of them valiant men, because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers.
The kings of the earth take a stand, and the rulers take counsel together, against Yahweh, and against his Anointed, saying,
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas;
Yahweh of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge.
The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.
With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.
Most certainly, the evil man will not be unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.
The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out.
My son, fear Yahweh and the king. Don’t join those who are rebellious;
But the destruction of transgressors and sinners shall be together, and those who forsake Yahweh shall be consumed.
The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.’ ”
Make an uproar, you peoples, and be broken in pieces! Listen, all you from far countries: dress for battle, and be shattered! Dress for battle, and be shattered!
Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine!
“Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backsliding will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing, that you have forsaken Yahweh your God, and that my fear is not in you,” says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies.
You have rejected me,” says Yahweh. “You have gone backward. Therefore I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you. I am weary of showing compassion.
For, behold, I begin to work evil at the city which is called by my name; and should you be utterly unpunished? You will not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth, says Yahweh of Armies.” ’
“When we burned incense to the queen of the sky, and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her, without our husbands?”
When I tell the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand.
Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and no one will deliver her out of my hand.
The pride of Israel testifies to his face. Therefore Israel and Ephraim will stumble in their iniquity. Judah also will stumble with them.
They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Jesus answered them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” They marveled greatly at him.
He said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went out, and said to them, “Who are you looking for?”
But Peter asked her, “How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
Do you think this, O man who judges those who practice such things, and do the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?
In covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words: whose sentence now from of old doesn’t linger, and their destruction will not slumber.
