Hebrew Text— Deuteronomy 10:19Therefore love the foreigner, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
But don’t forget to be doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
Don’t withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it.
that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you lived as a foreigner in his land.
He shall dwell with you, among you, in the place which he shall choose within one of your gates, where it pleases him best. You shall not oppress him.
“But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God,
They also said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live as foreigners in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks. For the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”
Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.
Now the time that the children of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred thirty years.
“ ‘If a stranger lives as a foreigner with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong.
Depart from evil, and do good. Seek peace, and pursue it.
It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He will maintain his cause in judgment.
Yahweh is good to all. His tender mercies are over all his works.
He who has a generous eye will be blessed; for he shares his food with the poor.
For whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven, he is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
Jesus therefore said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness doesn’t overtake you. He who walks in the darkness doesn’t know where he is going.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.
And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.
redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
See that no one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always follow after that which is good for one another and for all.
This saying is faithful, and concerning these things I desire that you affirm confidently, so that those who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men;
For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.
“You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
“ ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people; but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am Yahweh.
The stranger who lives as a foreigner with you shall be to you as the native-born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you lived as foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.
Trust in Yahweh, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.
All day long he deals graciously, and lends. His offspring is blessed.
He who has pity on the poor lends to Yahweh; he will reward him.
The people of the land have used oppression and exercised robbery. Yes, they have troubled the poor and needy, and have oppressed the foreigner wrongfully.
Don’t oppress the widow, nor the fatherless, the foreigner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.’
Whoever gives one of these little ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, most certainly I tell you he will in no way lose his reward.”
“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work.
God spoke in this way: that his offspring would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.
Now I say this: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God in Christ, the law, which came four hundred thirty years after, does not annul, so as to make the promise of no effect.
who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.
but Christ is faithful as a Son over his house. We are his house, if we hold fast our confidence and the glorying of our hope firm to the end.
God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” He said, “Here I am.”
She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”
“I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
You shall have one kind of law for the foreigner as well as the native-born; for I am Yahweh your God.’ ”
“ ‘If your brother has become poor, and his hand can’t support himself among you, then you shall uphold him. He shall live with you like an alien and a temporary resident.
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “Your brother Israel says: You know all the travail that has happened to us;
how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time. The Egyptians mistreated us and our fathers.
You shall not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take a widow’s clothing in pledge;
‘Cursed is he who withholds justice from the foreigner, fatherless, and widow.’ All the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
They soon forgot his works. They didn’t wait for his counsel,
if you don’t oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, and don’t shed innocent blood in this place, and don’t walk after other gods to your own hurt;
If you will not listen, and if you will not take it to heart, to give glory to my name,” says Yahweh of Armies, “then I will send the curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have cursed them already, because you do not take it to heart.
I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don’t fear me,” says Yahweh of Armies.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?” But they were silent.
and crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, don’t torment me.”
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
But he, desiring to justify himself, asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.
“In this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples.
Yet he didn’t leave himself without witness, in that he did good and gave you rains from the sky and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.
But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at length you have revived your thought for me; in which you did indeed take thought, but you lacked opportunity.
Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
For God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the labor of love which you showed toward his name, in that you served the saints, and still do serve them.
Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for in doing so, some have entertained angels without knowing it.
In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’t love his brother.
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. Whoever loves the Father also loves the child who is born of him.
He said to Abram, “Know for sure that your offspring will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years.
“You shall not oppress an alien, for you know the heart of an alien, since you were aliens in the land of Egypt.
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil.
Were there none found who returned to give glory to God, except this foreigner?”
So then, as we have opportunity, let’s do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of the faith.
