Hebrew Text— Genesis 44:32For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I don’t bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.’

But now he has obtained a more excellent ministry, by so much as he is also the mediator of a better covenant, which on better promises has been given as law.
He commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in his sack’s mouth.
With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s slaves.”
He who is collateral for a stranger will suffer for it, but he who refuses pledges of collateral is secure.
“Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us confusion of face, as it is today; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, who are near, and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you.
They came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house,
“But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh; and be sure your sin will find you out.
Ensure your servant’s well-being. Don’t let the proud oppress me.
Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.
I chattered like a swallow or a crane. I moaned like a dove. My eyes weaken looking upward. Lord, I am oppressed. Be my security.”
and will not rather tell him, ‘Prepare my supper, clothe yourself properly, and serve me, while I eat and drink. Afterward you shall eat and drink’?
These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.
For this reason he is the mediator of a new covenant, since a death has occurred for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, that those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
Abram said, “Lord Yahweh, what will you give me, since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”
The child grew and was weaned. Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
He made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
Jacob offered a sacrifice in the mountain, and called his relatives to eat bread. They ate bread, and stayed all night in the mountain.
for behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and also stood upright; and behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed down to my sheaf.”
He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”
I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever;
When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and prepare; for the men will dine with me at noon.”
They prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there.
They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.
When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men. When you overtake them, ask them, ‘Why have you rewarded evil for good?
Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, and he was still there. They fell on the ground before him.
Judah said, “What will we tell my lord? What will we speak? How will we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we and he also in whose hand the cup is found.”
Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord’s slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.
I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you. I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.
If there is a controversy between men, and they come to judgment and the judges judge them, then they shall justify the righteous and condemn the wicked.
But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against the children of Israel.
He brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.
Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their big toes cut off, scavenged under my table. As I have done, so God has done to me.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
Shall I then take my bread, my water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men who I don’t know where they come from?”
As Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. He recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people didn’t say a word.
“Now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,
Yahweh, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guiltiness; for no one can stand before you because of this.”
There is no umpire between us, that might lay his hand on us both.
“Now give a pledge. Be collateral for me with yourself. Who is there who will strike hands with me?
oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!
“Behold, I am of small account. What will I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.
Lord, open my lips. My mouth will declare your praise.
My son, if you have become collateral for your neighbor, if you have struck your hands in pledge for a stranger,
so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.
She has prepared her meat. She has mixed her wine. She has also set her table.
A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes collateral in the presence of his neighbor.
Don’t you be one of those who strike hands, of those who are collateral for debts.
A man who is tormented by life blood will be a fugitive until death; no one will support him.
“Now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, please judge between me and my vineyard.
Therefore by this the iniquity of Jacob will be forgiven, and this is all the fruit of taking away his sin: that he makes all the stones of the altar as chalk stones that are beaten in pieces, so that the Asherah poles and the incense altars shall rise no more.
He will make a firm covenant with many for one week. In the middle of the week he will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. On the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate; and even to the full end, and that determined, wrath will be poured out on the desolate.”
For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.
for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins.
He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many.
Again he returned, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they didn’t know what to answer him.
But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known.
Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
In the same way he also took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink, in memory of me.”
who also made us sufficient as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
By so much, Jesus has become the collateral of a better covenant.
to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better than that of Abel.
Now may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep with the blood of an eternal covenant, our Lord Jesus,
