Hebrew Text— Job 16:22For when a few years have come, I will go the way of no return.

But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that makes black the day terrify it.
If I look for Sheol as my house, if I have spread my couch in the darkness,
“Behold, today I am going the way of all the earth. You know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which Yahweh your God spoke concerning you. All have happened to you. Not one thing has failed of it.
“Now my days are swifter than a runner. They flee away. They see no good.
For I know that you will bring me to death, To the house appointed for all living.
“Yahweh, show me my end, what is the measure of my days. Let me know how frail I am.
The days of our years are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty years; yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for it passes quickly, and we fly away.
“Be strong and courageous; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
“Isn’t a man forced to labor on earth? Aren’t his days like the days of a hired hand?
before I go where I will not return from, to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death;
But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he?
where then is my hope? as for my hope, who will see it?
yet he will perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’
For what does he care for his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off?
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Gray hair is a crown of glory. It is attained by a life of righteousness.
a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
There is no man who has power over the spirit to contain the spirit; neither does he have power over the day of death. There is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver those who practice it.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death.
Yahweh of Armies says, “Consider, and call for the mourning women, that they may come. Send for the skillful women, that they may come.
As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more.
(For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow.)
Behold, he will kill me. I have no hope. Nevertheless, I will maintain my ways before him.
“Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.
“For there is hope for a tree if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, that the tender branch of it will not cease.
so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they will not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.
If a man dies, will he live again? I would wait all the days of my warfare, until my release should come.
My days are past. My plans are broken off, as are the thoughts of my heart.
Terrors have turned on me. They chase my honor as the wind. My welfare has passed away as a cloud.
All go to one place. All are from the dust, and all turn to dust again.
He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the boundaries of their dwellings,
For, “All flesh is like grass, and all of man’s glory like the flower in the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls;
The time came near that Israel must die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please put your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me. Please don’t bury me in Egypt,
When Jacob finished charging his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, breathed his last breath, and was gathered to his people.
He has filled them with wisdom of heart to work all kinds of workmanship, of the engraver, of the skillful workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of those who do any workmanship, and of those who make skillful works.
He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, “Be strong and courageous; for you shall bring the children of Israel into the land which I swore to them. I will be with you.”
David said, “As Yahweh lives, Yahweh will strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.
For we must die, and are like water spilled on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.
Barzillai said to the king, “How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?
“I am going the way of all the earth. You be strong therefore, and show yourself a man;
David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do it. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed; for Yahweh God, even my God, is with you. He will not fail you, nor forsake you, until all the work for the service of Yahweh’s house is finished.
They were broken in pieces, nation against nation, and city against city; for God troubled them with all adversity.
He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He departed without being missed; and they buried him in David’s city, but not in the tombs of the kings.
Between morning and evening they are destroyed. They perish forever without any regarding it.
My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope.
“ ‘Why, then, have you brought me out of the womb? I wish I had given up the spirit, and no eye had seen me.
They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know?
You will be secure, because there is hope. Yes, you will search, and will take your rest in safety.
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his bounds that he can’t pass;
The waters wear the stones. The torrents of it wash away the dust of the earth. So you destroy the hope of man.
You forever prevail against him, and he departs. You change his face, and send him away.
His memory will perish from the earth. He will have no name in the street.
He has broken me down on every side, and I am gone. He has plucked my hope up like a tree.
He lies down rich, but he will not do so again. He opens his eyes, and he is not.
Yes, he loads the thick cloud with moisture. He spreads abroad the cloud of his lightning.
For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn’t there.
But he passed away, and behold, he was not. Yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.
Behold, you have made my days hand widths. My lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely every man stands as a breath.”
Oh spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go away and exist no more.”
What man is he who shall live and not see death, who shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?
My days are like a long shadow. I have withered like grass.
For the wind passes over it, and it is gone. Its place remembers it no more.
The memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.
The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but in death, the righteous has a refuge.
Yes, if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many. All that comes is vanity.
yes, they shall be afraid of heights, and terrors will be on the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail; because man goes to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about the streets:
This is the end of the matter. All has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.
“Go, and tell Hezekiah, ‘Yahweh, the God of David your father, says, “I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.
I said, “I won’t see Yah, Yah in the land of the living. I will see man no more with the inhabitants of the world.
My dwelling is removed, and is carried away from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver. He will cut me off from the loom. From day even to night you will make an end of me.
Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?
for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went, the multitudes pressed against him.
It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.
Watch! Stand firm in the faith! Be courageous! Be strong!
but if I wait long, that you may know how men ought to behave themselves in God’s house, which is the assembly of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.
You therefore, my child, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment,
Whereas you don’t know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
