Hebrew Text— Psalms 13:2How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me?

and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes. Did you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing babies you have perfected praise?’ ”
A cheerful heart makes good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.
A man’s spirit will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed spirit, who can bear?
Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them; for the deeds of his hands will be paid back to him.
Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.
but God chose the foolish things of the world that he might put to shame those who are wise. God chose the weak things of the world that he might put to shame the things that are strong.
He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
He asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”
May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
Saul was afraid of David, because Yahweh was with him, and had departed from Saul.
The cords of Sheol were around me. The snares of death caught me.
The king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.
My brothers have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;
The cords of death surrounded me. The floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
Deliver me from all my transgressions. Don’t make me the reproach of the foolish.
at the taunt of one who reproaches and verbally abuses, because of the enemy and the avenger.
My heart is severely pained within me. The terrors of death have fallen on me.
We took sweet fellowship together. We walked in God’s house with company.
You will have a song, as in the night when a holy feast is kept, and gladness of heart, as when one goes with a flute to come to Yahweh’s mountain, to Israel’s Rock.
Why do you cry over your injury? Your pain is incurable. For the greatness of your iniquity, because your sins have increased, I have done these things to you.
The prince shall go in with them when they go in. When they go out, he shall go out.
For I will be to Ephraim like a lion, and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I myself will tear in pieces and go away. I will carry off, and there will be no one to deliver.
At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.
“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.
Though I were righteous, yet I wouldn’t answer him. I would make supplication to my judge.
“Now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold of me.
Notwithstanding my right I am considered a liar. My wound is incurable, though I am without disobedience.’
For Yahweh knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.
They close up their callous hearts. With their mouth they speak proudly.
He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey, as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I didn’t know it. They tore at me, and didn’t cease.
“Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you into pieces, and there be no one to deliver.
Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us.
saying, “God has forsaken him. Pursue and take him, for no one will rescue him.”
“Defend the weak, the poor, and the fatherless. Maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants, how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the mighty peoples,
They pour out arrogant words. All the evildoers boast.
All the days of the afflicted are wretched, but one who has a cheerful heart enjoys a continual feast.
For it is a day of confusion, and of treading down, and of perplexity, from the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, in the valley of vision, a breaking down of the walls, and a crying to the mountains.”
I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me.
“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy of Yahweh honorable; and honor it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words,
But I had respect for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went.
For her wounds are incurable; for it has come even to Judah. It reaches to the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.
to execute judgment on all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
Is this the way you repay Yahweh, foolish and unwise people? Isn’t he your father who has bought you? He has made you and established you.
“Don’t keep talking so exceedingly proudly. Don’t let arrogance come out of your mouth, for Yahweh is a God of knowledge. By him actions are weighed.
Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.
Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed; a high tower in times of trouble.
from men by your hand, Yahweh, from men of the world, whose portion is in this life. You fill the belly of your cherished ones. Your sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.
Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.
I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long.
He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.
I was glad when they said to me, “Let’s go to Yahweh’s house!”
Then I saw all the labor and achievement that is the envy of a man’s neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
but he will judge the poor with righteousness, and decide with equity for the humble of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips he will kill the wicked.
Therefore I said, “Look away from me. I will weep bitterly. Don’t labor to comfort me for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
Their nobles send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns, and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are disappointed and confounded, and cover their heads.
Yahweh, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded. You are stronger than I, and have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day. Everyone mocks me.
For Yahweh says, “Your hurt is incurable. Your wound is grievous.
Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the residue of the people who remained in the city, the deserters also who fell away to him, and the residue of the people who remained.
For this our heart is faint. For these things our eyes are dim.
Then he said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perversion; for they say, ‘Yahweh has forsaken the land, and Yahweh doesn’t see.’
For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.
so that on the contrary you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his excessive sorrow.
For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death.
Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will kill with the breath of his mouth, and destroy by the manifestation of his coming;
The great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give to her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
Saul was even more afraid of David; and Saul was David’s enemy continually.
For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may Yahweh reward you good for that which you have done to me today.
The king said to me, “Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.” Then I was very much afraid.
Esther said, “An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman!” Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.
If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still will not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction.
lest they tear apart my soul like a lion, ripping it in pieces, while there is no one to deliver.
From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.
The enemy is overtaken by endless ruin. The very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished.
to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may terrify no more.
from the wicked who oppress me, my deadly enemies, who surround me.
For my life is spent with sorrow, my years with sighing. My strength fails because of my iniquity. My bones are wasted away.
Let the lying lips be mute, which speak against the righteous insolently, with pride and contempt.
For I am ready to fall. My pain is continually before me.
These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me, how I used to go with the crowd, and led them to God’s house, with the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping a holy day.
How long, God, shall the adversary reproach? Shall the enemy blaspheme your name forever?
Remember this, that the enemy has mocked you, Yahweh. Foolish people have blasphemed your name.
You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries. You have made all of his enemies rejoice.
The cords of death surrounded me, the pains of Sheol got a hold of me. I found trouble and sorrow.
A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but an aching heart breaks the spirit.
All his days he also eats in darkness, he is frustrated, and has sickness and wrath.
Oh that I could comfort myself against sorrow! My heart is faint within me.
Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will you indeed be to me as a deceitful brook, like waters that fail?
‘You said, “Woe is me now! For Yahweh has added sorrow to my pain! I am weary with my groaning, and I find no rest.” ’
Her adversaries have become the head. Her enemies prosper; for Yahweh has afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions. Her young children have gone into captivity before the adversary.
Her filthiness was in her skirts. She didn’t remember her latter end. Therefore she has come down astoundingly. She has no comforter. “See, Yahweh, my affliction; for the enemy has magnified himself.”
“Look, Yahweh; for I am in distress. My heart is troubled. My heart turns over within me, for I have grievously rebelled. Abroad, the sword bereaves. At home, it is like death.
Then he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me.”
When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.
that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.
For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.
