Hebrew Text— Numbers 14:11Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? and how long will they not believe in me, for all the signs which I have worked among them?

He called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because the children of Israel quarreled, and because they tested Yahweh, saying, “Is Yahweh among us, or not?”
Therefore I swore in my wrath, “They won’t enter into my rest.”
throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works.
In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily,
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.
All the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “We wish that we had died in the land of Egypt, or that we had died in this wilderness!
‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me,
“See how Ahab humbles himself before me? Because he humbles himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but I will bring the evil on his house in his son’s day.”
They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law.
Yes, they despised the pleasant land. They didn’t believe his word,
You simple, understand prudence! You fools, be of an understanding heart!
It will happen that, like as I have watched over them to pluck up and to break down and to overthrow and to destroy and to afflict, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,” says Yahweh.
“You, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this,
Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you don’t believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, these testify about me.
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake.
that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me.
With many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,
Now I desire to remind you, though you already know this, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who didn’t believe.
Moses said, “Now Yahweh will give you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to satisfy you, because Yahweh hears your murmurings which you murmur against him. And who are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Yahweh.”
“I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, ‘At evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am Yahweh your God.’ ”
surely you shall not come into the land concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell therein, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
But I will bring your little ones that you said should be captured or killed in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected.
These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Yahweh, and he was sanctified in them.
Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
You shall not tempt Yahweh your God, as you tempted him in Massah.
They have dealt corruptly with him. They are not his children, because of their defect. They are a perverse and crooked generation.
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
Notwithstanding, they would not listen, but hardened their neck, like the neck of their fathers, who didn’t believe in Yahweh their God.
because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before Yahweh, when you heard what I spoke against this place, and against its inhabitants, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,’ says Yahweh.
Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers;
because they didn’t believe in God, and didn’t trust in his salvation.
For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works.
They soon forgot his works. They didn’t wait for his counsel,
The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.
and say, “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
I saw among the simple ones. I discerned among the youths a young man void of understanding,
Haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? The everlasting God, Yahweh, the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t faint. He isn’t weary. His understanding is unsearchable.
This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and have gone after other gods to serve them, and to worship them, will even be as this belt, which is profitable for nothing.
in that day I swore to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands.
I, Yahweh, have spoken it. It will happen, and I will do it. I won’t go back. I won’t spare. I won’t repent. According to your ways, and according to your doings, they will judge you,” says the Lord Yahweh.’ ”
But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.
But of the multitude, many believed in him. They said, “When the Christ comes, he won’t do more signs than those which this man has done, will he?”
The man answered them, “How amazing! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
Since the world began it has never been heard of that anyone opened the eyes of someone born blind.
If I don’t do the works of my Father, don’t believe me.
But the chief priests conspired to put Lazarus to death also,
But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they didn’t believe in him,
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Yahweh said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?
Pay attention to him, and listen to his voice. Don’t provoke him, for he will not pardon your disobedience, for my name is in him.
surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.
Yahweh’s anger burned in that day, and he swore, saying,
Yet in this thing you didn’t believe Yahweh your God,
Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiff-necked.
because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God, when you heard his words against this place, and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me, I also have heard you,” says Yahweh.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.
How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down, like a leaning wall, like a tottering fence?
The proud and arrogant man—“Scoffer” is his name— he works in the arrogance of pride.
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him, to our God, for he will freely pardon.
For this the earth will mourn, and the heavens above be black, because I have spoken it. I have planned it, and I have not repented, neither will I turn back from it.”
I have seen your abominations, even your adulteries, and your neighing, the lewdness of your prostitution, on the hills in the field. Woe to you, Jerusalem! You will not be made clean. How long will it yet be?”
“Call together the archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp against her all around. Let none of it escape. Pay her back according to her work. According to all that she has done, do to her; for she has been proud against Yahweh, against the Holy One of Israel.
“ ‘ “But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They didn’t walk in my statutes, and they rejected my ordinances, which if a man keeps, he shall live in them. They greatly profaned my Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them in the wilderness, to consume them.
Moreover also I swore to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands;
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won’t he much more clothe you, you of little faith?
He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Jesus, perceiving it, said, “Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, ‘because you have brought no bread?’
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.
Then he said to Thomas, “Reach here your finger, and see my hands. Reach here your hand, and put it into my side. Don’t be unbelieving, but believing.”
Repent therefore of this, your wickedness, and ask God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.
For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
To whom did he swear that they wouldn’t enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient?
Without faith it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.
Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him, “This is what Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.
because all those men who have seen my glory, and my signs, which I worked in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not listened to my voice;
“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation that complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel, which they complain against me.
and refused to obey. They weren’t mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn’t forsake them.
You sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonor? Will you love vanity and seek after falsehood?
How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert!
Don’t harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,
“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?
Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long will your evil thoughts lodge within you?
Let Samaria throw out his calf idol! My anger burns against them! How long will it be until they are capable of purity?
For Yahweh of Armies says: “As I thought to do evil to you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and I didn’t repent;
Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me.”
He answered him, “Unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to me.”
Afterward he was revealed to the eleven themselves as they sat at the table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they didn’t believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me. Whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe.”
But if I do them, though you don’t believe me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”
If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now they have seen and also hated both me and my Father.
What if God, willing to show his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness,
For who, when they heard, rebelled? Wasn’t it all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?
